How to present the results in the thesis – Explanation and Recommendations
Step after elaborating the methodological framework
The presentation of the results is the next step after elaborating the methodological framework. Obviously, the results are only possible to obtain after applying a method of collection and analysis. In this way, it is corroborated that the thesis is not only a research work, it is the representation of the coherent evolutionary process of a determined investigation.
The results can form an independent chapter or be part of a section in the methodological framework. Everything depends on the style of the author and the dispositions of the university or institute where the work of degree will be presented.
The important thing is that the organization gives the reader a clear idea of the analysis and interpretation of the results obtained and the contribution of the author with respect to the development of new schemes, models, concepts or other possibilities contemplated in the nature of the work done.
The extension of the presentation of results will depend on the complexity of the data analyzed, the theories studied, the hypotheses and variables contemplated to interpret the information.
In field research, the analysis and interpretation of the results obtained must be shown, in accordance with the objectives and hypotheses of the investigation. You can use tables or figures to show more clearly the information.
In documentary research, the organization of the results will depend on the consultation materials analyzed and, of course, on the purposes or subject of the research. In any case, the author must account for the progress made regarding the evaluation of the sources and the formulation of own arguments. It also applies to scientific articles and essays.
In the special and feasible projects, the results must reflect the results obtained in each of the phases or stages proposed in the project and the author’s original contribution.
In the internship reports, the results should reflect the general evaluation of the intern’s experience, the objectives achieved, achievements reached and final recommendations.
It is likely that the use of tables or figures will be needed to help communicate the different levels of interpretation of results. The graphic material can be very useful, besides giving added value to the communication and design of the information. Nowadays, word processors and other programs automatically offer the creation of tables and figures. These important tools must be used with criteria of relevance and coherence. Keep in mind the following recommendations of the APA Standards:
It is necessary to edit and correct the graphic material with the same care that is done with the textual material, it is necessary to eliminate typos and typographical problems.
If a comparison is made through a table or figure, the elements must be next to each other.
Signs must be placed to delimit the information very well. The size of the letter may vary, but it must maintain an appropriate size so that it can be read without the need for extensions or reductions. The font type remains the same as the rest of the text, Times New Roman.
Readability should not be hindered with graphic material external to tables or figures.
Choose the graphic material with caution. Many tables or figures can end up confusing the reader, in addition they can cut the text a lot, which would cause design problems.
Evaluate if the graphic material is more useful than the text to communicate the results. Sometimes you can be more effective writing the results in paragraphs correctly.
Do not paste scanned tables or from other programs different from the word processors, because they can cause typographical and design problems.
If you need to reproduce or edit a material from a source protected by copyright and reproduction you must request authorization in writing from the copyright holder. If permission is obtained, the relevant credits must be placed at the bottom of the table or figure.
